Professionals Using Social Media to Reconnect
Karen Miller’s blog post “Employees Using Social Media to Reconnect” really resonated with me. I’ve personally been delighted to stumble upon (forgive the pun, but I couldn’t help myself) several former colleagues whose friendship I cherish, but distance, time, commitments had separated us.
So many good things have come from reconnecting: renewing relationships and swapping stories, meeting in person, developing business prospects, networking and helping each other with resources.
Karen’s post talks about finding folks on Facebook. Some of my professional reconnection has been through Facebook Groups where many of my vendors and clients have congregated. More important for me have been the reconnections through LinkedIn. Many associations and trade groups have formed Groups there. I have found groups a valuable place to share information that helps others as well as to get help myself.
- I’ve dropped job descriptions into groups where a likely candidate might be found.
- I’ve shared my favorite resources, such as webhosting options.
- I’ve directed friends and colleagues to posts I share often about writing LinkedIn profiles (http://j.mp/SMD120 and (http://j.mp/SMD200) and becoming a Service Provider there.
- I have received and given LinkedIn recommendations to help colleagues gain Service Provider status.
Other social sites haven’t been helpful – yet. I’m sure as participation grows and my colleagues find more compelling reasons for using these services that I will connect with more of them. I will certainly enjoy each opportunity.
In these days and times with technology coming at us so fast it’s impossible for one person to absorb and learn all of it, networking and mentoring makes the process easier and more fun!
