An Easy, Delicious Baked Beans Recipe
Family and friends expect this traditional dish at summer potlucks
Here’s a simple, classic recipe for flavorful baked beans, made from scratch. While beans take several hours of soaking and cooking, supervision is minimal. Just do a little tasting and tweaking during the last hours of cooking.
Boston Baked Beans

Equipment
- 1 crockpot
Ingredients
- 3 cups pinto beans
- 2 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp molasses
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard
- 1 14 oz. can diced or crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 lb salt pork
- 1 onion
Instructions
- Rinse beans and remove any stones. Soak overnight in cold water.
- Drain water and cover with fresh water.
- Cook on stove till tender, about 1 hour.
- Drain water and place beans in crockpot.
- Add whole onion or chopped, if you prefer.
- Add chunks of salt pork, large enough to remove after cooking.
- Add salt, molasses, brown sugar, tomatoes, mustard and vinegar.
- Cook at least 4 hours, checking seasoning.
- Remove salt pork and onion.
Notes
Instead of salt pork, you might like to use cooked, chopped bacon or sausage.You may prefer navy beans, but I’ve always used pinto.
