Plum Butter or Prune Plum Filling Recipe

I use this recipe and freeze packages of 2 tablespoons each for use in the Copycat of Publix Grocery Stores’ recipe for Breakfast Bread.

Prune Plum Filling or Plum Butter

Made as an ingredient in the Copycat recipe for Publix grocery stores' Breakfast Bread

  • 2 cups prunes, pitted
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar


  • Combine first 4 ingredients in medium saucepan and bring to a boil for a minute.
  • Reduce heat to low to simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Remove lid and let simmer 3-5 minutes to let liquid evaporate until only 3 tablespoons of liquid remain. Remove from heat.
  • Add brown sugar and stir to dissolve.
  • Blend mixture in food processor until smooth.
  • Let cool.


For the Publix Breakfast Bread recipe, I freeze individual packages of the plum filling; each one has 2 tablespoons of plum filling wrapped in cellophane.
